Disability and Residential Care Services

Our disability and residential care nutrition services include:

  • Individual resident consultations
    • resident nutritional status screening and assessments
    • aims to identify residents who are at risk or, or are, under-/mal-nourished or who have an eating problem or require mealtime assistance
    • allows for monitoring of changes to nutritional status 

  

  • resident consultancy services
    • assessment of the individual nutritional requirements of residents
    • individualised dietary recommendations for a range of nutrition-related problems
    • nutrition care plans implemented in consultation with resident, family and staff (including for tube feeding)
    • information on drug-nutrient interactions can be provided
    • dietary transfer details can be provided to the hospital Dietitian if the resident requires hospitalisation
    • individual resident consultations are available as:
      • on-site consultations (group home residents)
      • rooms-based or home visit consultations (clients not in residential care) 

  

  • Disability Group Home and Residential Care Consultancy Services
    • menu reviews
      • reviews the adequacy of the written menu
      • aims to demonstrate that residents have the opportunity to consume the minimum amounts of food required for adequate nourishment and hydration
      • regular assessment allows for review of effectiveness of quality improvement strategies 

 

  • staff nutrition education and training
    • general nutrition principles for caring for disability / residential care clients - healthy eating for people with a disability
    • special diets eg. diabetes and the glycaemic index - how strict does the diabetic diet need to be?
    • prevention and management of malnutrition - swallowing problems does not have to mean 'skinny'
    • managing overweight - what to do for the resident who is at the other end of the spectrum
    • fibre, fluid and constipation - are prunes for breakfast enough?
    • menu planning - how to put together a healthy menu that will go down well
